Literature never gets old, which is why this summer marks our third annual books issue – a compendium of the most important publications of the season.
This year, we worked with a team of contributing editors including Barbara Epler of the publisher New Directions, Michael Mack of MACK publishing and the polemical columnist Nesrine Malik. Their selection ranged from the first Burundian novel translated into English to the magical and mad writings of Leonora Carrington. We also talked with the authors Ottessa Moshfegh, Stuart Jeffries and Gwendoline Riley, the curator of this year’s documenta 14 Adam Szymczyk and Quinn Latimer and the iconic book designer Peter Mendelsund, among many more. While the photographer Hellen van Meene led us “beyond the wardrobe” into a magical realm of bearded women and butterflied beauty.
